About this offer
Lidl (this deal): potted rose, 14cm pot, 32 to 34cm tall £4.99
Small potted mini or patio rose (supermarket / garden-centre small pot): £5 to £8
B&Q / Homebase: established patio roses in 4-litre pots (Harkness, YouGarden) £12 to £20
At £4.99 this sits at the cheaper end for a small potted rose, and well under the £12 to £20 you pay for a mature garden-centre rose. The larger pots are bigger, more established plants, so the fair way to read this is: pay a fraction of the price now and let a younger plant bulk up over a season or two. If you plant it out and it establishes, it is years of blooms for a fiver.
Worth knowing, since it catches people out: it is labelled for indoors, but this is a miniature or patio rose, which is a hardy perennial. It grows perfectly well outdoors in a border or patio pot and comes back year after year. What you get: a potted rose in a 14cm pot, 32 to 34cm tall, suited to small gardens, patios, containers or a bright windowsill indoors. To get the best from it outside, harden it off over a week or so if it has been kept indoors, then plant in full sun with free-draining soil and prune back after flowering. In store from Sunday 30/08 (article 10053156).
For £4.99 this is one of the cheapest ways to add proper rose colour to a patio or border. Pot it up, plant it out, or gift it, and with a bit of sun and the odd prune it will reward you with little clusters of blooms right through the season, then return next year to do it all again. As with all Lidl plant specials, once they clear the shelf they are gone, so grab your colour while it is in.
