WHATS RIVIERA MAYA LIKE
You can head for the Riviera Maya, on Mexicos Yucatán Peninsula, and do nothing but sip cocktails on tropical beaches. But theres so much more on offer. Mayan ruins, eco parks, world-class diving theyre all on the cards along this 30-kilometre stretch of coastline, which takes in lively Playa del Carmen and the quieter Punta Allen. Just so you know, beaches along this stretch of coastline can have a build-up of seaweed called sargassum. Its a natural phenomenon influenced by ocean currents and seasonal weather patterns in the Caribbean, so it can be hard to predict when itll arrive. When theres a lot of sargassum, hotel teams work continuously to keep the beaches as clean as possible.

There are some nice touches here. The sunloungers by the pools are four-posters, and beach-goers are looked after by waiters. There are five à la carte restaurants all included in your stay and the menus come from the imaginations of world-class chefs.
Rooms
These sophisticated suites all come with a furnished balcony or terrace, a king-size bed, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. Swim-up junior suites have direct access to the pool from the terrace. Suites in the premium section also have daybeds on the terrace and come with access to an exclusive premium pool with in-water loungers and a swim-up bar.
POOLS
There are four main swimming pools here, plus a fifth thats for premium guests. One is dedicated to relaxing and has king-size sunloungers dotted around it. And if you fancy swapping the pools for the beach, theres a stretch of custard-coloured sand by the back garden.
The tally of swim-up bars reaches three. The most central is Gaviota, where you can sip cocktails to the sound of the hotels waterfall splashing.

Head to this traditional-style à la carte for authentic Mexican dishes at dinner times. The menu stars tortilla soup, seafood ceviche, tacos and enchiladas, beef, chicken, and prawns. A tequila bar, La Cantina, is housed in the same building, specialising in flavoured tequilas that are made in-house. There are more than a dozen varieties, including coconut, chilli and coffee.
