Q: What does grid tied mean
A: A grid-tied (or grid-connected) plug-in solar system is a solar power system that works in parallel with the electricity grid. It generates electricity from solar panels, and that electricity is used by your home first. If your panels dont produce enough power, the grid supplies the rest. If you have excess it goes back to the grid
Q: Can I get paid for excess generation
A: Yes – but its complicated, normally you need an MCS certification to prove its been installed up to code. Octopus do offer a non-MCS route but it costs £250 and still requires building regs sign off.
Q: Isnt back feeding into your house dangerous
A: Watch this video – make your own mind up.
Q: But isnt it dangerous to generate power during a power cut, couldnt someone working on the grid get shocked if my house is generating from solar but the outside grid is down
A: Good question and its been handled by the equipment – it shuts down as soon as there is no grid connection (again, see above video)
Q: Do I need a smart meter
A: By smart meter here we mean a Shelly or Ecoflow Smart meter – not always but if you have a battery system and want to put excess into it and have the battery match your house load then yes youll need one. If you just have a microinverter and two panels its not needed.
Q: Ive got an old disc electric meter will this work
A: You have a unicorn there, if its a really really old one itll run backwards effectively banking any solar you make.
Q: Do I need to tell the grid operator
A: Yes, fill in a G98 notification to your grid operator. Here is a guide that I followed that helped be get sign off within 2 days.
Q: But this is against the law A: Ehhh, grey area, currently plugging it in via a 3pin plug is against regulations yes, but the regulations are imminently going to change. The government just published a product spec without go ahead from industry quangos and it looks like they are pushing it through come hell or high water.
Not all of the products here come with a 3pin plug (see key)
